Read MoreMining is the backbone of many crafting professions in Classic WoW. Without miners, crafters wouldn’t be able to create weapons, armor, gadgets, or even some raid materials. Whether you’re supporting your own Blacksmithing and Engineering, gathering to sell ore and bars on the Auction House, or stockpiling for your guild, Mining is an efficient and evergreen source of value.
It’s also one of the most straightforward professions to level. Once you know where veins are located and the required skill to mine them, all you need is a Mining Pick and a bit of route knowledge. It synergizes perfectly with dungeon grinding, zone exploration, and farming runs. Plus, it’s a primary driver behind the gold-making potential of many leveling characters and alts.
Mining allows players to extract ores, stones, and gems from ore veins scattered throughout the world. These veins require specific skill levels to mine and yield raw materials that can be smelted into bars or used in crafting recipes. The profession uses a combination of exploration, strategic route planning, and resource management to maximize output.
Once you have Mining trained and a Mining Pick in your inventory, you can begin mining any veins your skill allows. Activate the “Find Minerals” ability to show nodes on your minimap as yellow dots. Right-clicking on a vein will begin the mining process and yield ore, stone, and occasionally gems.
These levels are taught by basic trainers found in most capital cities and early zones.
To learn Expert Mining, you must purchase and read the book “Expert Mining”. This is sold by:
To unlock Artisan Mining, speak with Jorn Van-Kal in Burning Steppes. You need to be level 35 and have 200 Mining skill to begin training.
Engineering requires vast quantities of metal bars, stone, and rare ores. Pairing it with Mining is highly recommended for self-sufficiency and economic advantage. From creating bombs and gadgets to scopes and repair bots, Engineering is fueled almost entirely by Mining.
Another natural pairing, Blacksmithing depends on mined materials for weapon and armor creation. If you’re playing a Warrior or Paladin, this combo is especially beneficial.
This profession was introduced in The Burning Crusade and is not part of Classic WoW.
If you don’t plan to craft, Mining can be paired with Skinning or Herbalism for maximum resource gathering and auction house profit.
Here’s a breakdown of ore types and the skill levels required to mine them:
Mining veins occasionally yield valuable gems used in crafting and vendor sales. These include:
Mining materials can be smelted at a forge to create metal bars. These are essential for many crafting professions and offer significant auction house value.
Used for crafting powerful gear and epic weapons. Can only be mined in Blackrock Depths and requires special training.
Many players prefer to buy raw ore to level their professions. Selling Copper, Iron, Mithril, and Thorium on the Auction House is a proven gold-making method.
Smelted bars are used in bulk by Engineers and Blacksmiths. Thorium Bars, Mithril Bars, and Steel Bars are in high demand throughout all phases of Classic.
Arcane Crystals are rare and valuable, especially during AQ40 and Naxxramas when players need Arcanite Bars for resistance gear and crafted epics. Partnering with an Alchemist to transmute Arcanite is a great long-term profit strategy.
Stones like Solid Stone and Dense Stone are used in Engineering and Blacksmithing. Gems can be sold to crafters or directly to vendors for profit.
